Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency a website that includes videos and comments on portrayals of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American media critic and blog writer that has received prizes for her work, is a feminist blogger. Feminist Frequency - a not-for profit site for education that investigates gender representation in popular cultural narratives is founded and is directed by Sarkeesian. In addition, she works to expose the issues surrounding the harassment and targeted attacks on women, other minorities in online spaces she is determined to break down the stigmas and stereotypes in the popular culture. A graduate in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaker and she has delivered speech at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Inquiring about gender identity and feminism from at an early age, she created her website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the university. This ambitious woman planned to start an internet-based series that examined gender representation in games, but was the target of an online harassment campaign. But the harassment did not dissuade her. It only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit focused on the portrayal of women in popular media and the narratives that surround them.
